If you love strawberries as much as we do, your desired answer to this question would be: Everywhere. But that’s not how it is. Many countries don’t have the suitable climate and soil to grow strawberries, while others have different agricultural preferences.

And if you wish to know where do strawberries grow, it’s a good idea to consider the answer from two different perspectives. Where do (most) strawberries grow around the globe, and where do strawberries grow in the US.

China: Strawberry crop in China is vast and rising quickly. According to one estimate, overall production maybe 1.7 times that of the United States. China is becoming a more prominent player in the global strawberry industry, as it is in many other horticultural sectors. With rising urban affluence and changing consumer tastes, China’s domestic demand for fresh strawberries is quickly increasing. China’s frozen strawberry exports have increased dramatically. China has made gains into third markets and is now the leading supplier of frozen strawberries to Japan, surpassing the United States (i.e., California). Imports of frozen strawberries from China to the United States and Canada have increased dramatically in the last three years. US: The United States is a major producer of strawberries for both fresh and frozen markets across the world. California produces roughly 75% of the fresh and processed strawberries destined for wholesale markets in the United States. Strawberry production in Florida is also significant for fresh export markets. Because of the extended growing season in such locations, the fruit may be harvested for 6 to 8 months of the year. Strawberry harvest yields in California average 47,500 pounds per acre, with the highest-yield producers achieving 100,000 pounds per acre per year. After grapes, oranges, and apples, strawberries are the fourth most valuable fruit produced in the United States.

Mexico: Between 2011 and 2019, the cultivated area of strawberries in Mexico increased by 63 percent, according to government figures. In 2019, 10,375 hectares were planted on average, with output increasing by 97 percent to 443,994 tonnes of fruit. This expansion has raised exports significantly. From 65,143 tonnes of fresh strawberries worth $ 255 million in 2010 to 200,000 tonnes worth $ 827.3 million in 2019, the country has doubled its strawberry exports. Mexico’s economic advantages, including climate, utilization of better foreign varieties, sheltered cultivation in a macro-tunnel, and low labor costs, have helped Mexican growers to become formidable rivals in the worldwide strawberry market.

Turkey: After China, the United States, and Mexico, Turkey is the world’s fourth-largest strawberry grower. Mediterranean (52.1%), Aegean (24.7%), and Marmara (24.7%) are the main strawberry-producing areas in Turkey (14.6 percent ). Mersin city has 35 percent of overall output in the Mediterranean area, followed by Aydin, Antalya, Bursa, and Konya. Turkey’s strawberry exports have also grown year after year.

The items are often shipped to Istanbul and Izmir, which constitute Turkey’s two largest consumer markets. In addition, exporting firms buy strawberries to send to Russia.

Egypt: Egypt has strawberry fields covering 5,245 hectares of land. Ismailia, Beheira, and Qaluobia are the governorates that cultivate strawberries. The Crimson Merlin cultivar is extensively grown in Egypt; the fruit is flavorful and has a gleaming red peel that retains its color even after harvest. Fortuna has brilliant red glossy skin and a great flavor. Winter star’s brilliant red skin darkens somewhat after being stored in the freezer. It’s also low in acidity. Festival has a medium red skin color, good flavor, and long shelf life. The strawberry season in Egypt extends from November to April. Egypt’s Mediterranean temperature, fertile soils, and geographical position all help to produce high-quality fruits, and the leveled fertile plains offer it an advantage. Egypt strawberries thrive in temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees, and the optimal direct sunlight window is 6 to 10 hours.

Where Do Strawberries Grow In The US

Strawberries are adaptable to a broad range of climates and may be grown in USDA Zones 3 through 10. You must, however, select the appropriate kinds for your climate. Planting dates vary as well, ranging from December to February in Zone 10 to the first two or three weeks of May in Zone 3. In relatively colder climates, you’ll also need to mulch to protect your plants from the winter cold.

On roughly 34,000 acres along the California coast, California grows about 90% of all strawberries cultivated in the United States. Each season, fresh strawberry output in the state averages 50,000 pounds per acre. Fresh strawberries were gathered in 206,040,481 trays last year, totaling more than 1.8 billion pounds!

Strawberries are available for consumption and shipping all year in California. Strawberries are sent from Southern California in the winter, and production goes north when the weather warms up in the spring. The months of April to August are the busiest.

Strawberry Growth In Florida

Florida isCapitalered the “Winter Strawberry Capitol of the World.” With roughly 8,000 acres of land dedicated to strawberry production across the state, Florida is the second-largest strawberry-producing area in the United States. Strawberries are planted in Florida from September to early November, and blooming and fruiting last until April or May. Fruit set will not be continuous but will occur in two or three cycles, with freezes interfering.

While there are several varieties available, not all are suitable for cultivation in Florida. ‘Sweet Charlie,’ ‘Camarosa,’ ‘Chandler,’ ‘Oso Grande,’ ‘Selva,’ and ‘Festival’ are all Florida-friendly varieties.


Strawberries grow in a lot of countries, and being the second-largest producer in the world, the US has a lot of affordable and generous-in-variety local distribution.
