Do Strawberries And Rhubarb Go Together?

Strawberries and rhubarb.

Yes. They have been going together for centuries in Europe, in the form of a Strawberry-Rhubarb pie, but that’s not the only combination these two tasty, similarly-colored food items offer. Both go together in a wide variety of culinary delights.

If you wish to put the two together in different recipes, this blog is for you.

Strawberries and Rhubarb – What Do You Need To Know About The Two?

Strawberries and rhubarb have relatively little in common. The main difference is that one (strawberry) is a fruit while the other (rhubarb) is a vegetable.

Rhubarb

One of the most misunderstood foods on menus is rhubarb. It’s easy to locate in the grocery store, but not so much at the Farmer’s Market. It’s a perennial, although it’s not widely planted.

Rhubarb’s oxalic acid concentration makes the leaves toxic, but the stem is tasty. While rhubarb is cultivated in a few chilly areas in North Carolina, excellent rhubarb grows best in Michigan and Oregon, where the ground freezes. The plant, however, is native to Asia.

It’s naturally sour, which isn’t the most common taste experience in the United States — bitter is somewhat more popular. The sourness originates from the presence of oxalic acid.

It has an unusual appearance. It’s a stalk, to be sure. Celery and cardoons (another stalk that is an artichoke cousin in the thistle family) aren’t celebrated as much as attractive fruits like apples, blackberries, and tomatoes.

Despite its prominence in fruit pies, preserves, and coulis, rhubarb is a vegetable.

Fruit is anything that a plant produces in order to feed its seeds. When you choose an apple, you are not killing an apple tree, but when you eat a vegetable, you are killing the plant. When you pluck an onion or a beet, for example, you’re taking the entire plant with you. Rhubarb is harvested by pulling the full stalk from the ground and only plucking two stalks at a time, leaving at least five stalks for the following season’s supply.

While it’s technically a vegetable because of its features (it’s an edible plant with leaves and stalks), a New York court declared it fruit in 1947 to assist companies in avoiding paying more taxes.

Strawberry

While it’s widely accepted as a fruit, strawberry has some “false roots” as well. It’s not a vegetable like a rhubarb, but it’s not a pure fruit either.

The strawberry is referred to as a “fake fruit,” or pseudocarp, by botanists. A strawberry is really a multi-fruit that is made up of many little individual fruits that are encased in a fleshy receptacle.  And the brownish or white specks on the skin of it that are frequently mistaken for seeds are actually genuine fruits called achenes, and each one contains a single seed.

Strawberries are also abundant in fiber, thanks to these achenes. One-half cup of strawberries has more fiber than a piece of whole wheat bread and more than 70% of the recommended daily dose of vitamin C, according to The Wellness Encyclopedia of Food and Nutrition.

5 Recipes Where Strawberries And Rhubarb Go Together

There are several recipes where strawberry and rhubarb go together quite well. Some of them are:

1. Rhubarb Pie

Rhubarb pie is a pie containing rhubarb as the main ingredient. Rhubarb has been farmed in the United Kingdom since the 1600s, and the leaf stalks have been consumed since the 1700s. Aside from chopped rhubarb, it nearly usually has a lot of sugar to balance out the plant’s strong acidity. A strawberry rhubarb pie is a sweet and tangy pie filled with strawberries and rhubarb. Tapioca is also used on occasion. In some cases, a bottom pie crust and a variety of top crust types are generally used to make the pie.

2. Strawberry Rhubarb Compote

This compote recipe is straightforward. Rhubarb should be diced, and strawberries should be hulled. Grate the ginger root.Combine all of the ingredients in a saucepot and simmer until it gets the consistency of a jam.The taste is just right. The lemon juice should be added at the very end. It brings out the flavors of the other components much more.

The strawberry rhubarb compote may be kept in the refrigerator for at least two weeks, and it freezes nicely. Spread it on toast, biscuits, or spread it generously over plain cheesecake.

3. Berry Rhubarb Fool

If you are looking for something “custardy,” this is the one for you. It requires fresh/frozen rhubarb (sliced) and creating a mixture with sugar, salt, and orange juice (on heat). It’s then blended, refrigerated, and cooled. And you serve it with whipped cream and strawberries (usually halved). This is one of the recipes that rely mostly on the taste and rhubarb and use strawberries to balance the final product.

4. Lemon Rhubarb Tart Cake

It requires an oven (preheated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit). A 10-inch fluted tube pan should be greased and floured. And a lot of lemon juice. Other ingredients include cream butter and sugar (mixed till maximum fluffiness is achieved), beaten eggs, flour, baking soda, and salt. That’s just the “cake” part. Then you have to cook rhubarb with sugar (to offset the flavor) and serve it as a syrup with the cake, and use halved strawberries (ideally placed in the center of the cake slices).

5. Rhubarb RaisinMarmalade

If you like raisins and wish to use them to balance out the sour taste of rhubarb in a delicious marmalade, this is one recipe you shouldn’t miss. It requires oranges, lemons, raisins, rhubarb, and of course, strawberry. In this recipe, however, strawberries and rhubarb go together in the pan and don’t just meet in the end. Strawberries offer an extra boost of sweetness to this recipe.

Some honorable mentions include:

  • Rhubarbecue (Combines strawberries and rhubarb with pork ribs)
  • Strawberry Rhubarb Coffee Cake
  • Strawberry-Rhubarb Cobbler with Honey
  • Pavlova with Rhubarb and Strawberries

Final Words

Rhubarb is a vegetablemasqueradingas a fruit (now with legal backing), and strawberry is a “false fruit.” While that’s not why they go together in so many delicious desserts and other recipes, it makes the combination ironic, to say the least. Still, the Strawberry-Rhubarb is likely to be amazing for your taste buds and your health.
