Baking Time

The best way to make sure your pie is cooked through and not raw in the middle is by cooking it for a good 45 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit if you see that browning too quickly – cover with aluminum foil.

Ingredients

  • Flour –  three cups
  • Salt as per need
  • Half cup shortening
  • Unsalted butter – half cup
  • Ice water – eight to nine tablespoon
  • Peeled and sliced apples – 2 lbs
  • Granulated sugar – one-fourth cup
  • Brown sugar – one-fourth cup
  • Ground cinnamon – half tablespoon
  • Ground ginger – one-fourth tablespoon
  • Ground nutmeg – one-fourth tablespoon
  • Strawberries – two cups
  • Granulated sugar – one-third cup
  • Lemon juice – one tablespoon
  • Cornstarch – two tablespoon
  • Unsalted butter – two tablespoon
  • Egg

Process

  1. Making pie dough is a simple process. First, you must make the crust by mixing flour and salt with either a pastry cutter or two forks until it becomes pea-like consistency. One tablespoon at a time will be enough for each half of your finished product, plus about two tablespoons extra since we’ll use this as an adhesive later on. Once all ingredients have been combined into one ball shape, sprinkle them lightly under running water while stirring continuously, so no clumps form. Continue doing this until there’s just enough moisture left that when pinched between fingers tips, they hold their shape without crumbling apart before refrigerating overnight. For best results, always keep cold & fresh.
  2. In one bowl, combine the apples with both sugars. Let it sit for an hour before stirring in some spices like cinnamon and ginger as well. Next, add strawberries to another big mixing cup – they’re going into a marmalade, so you need all those yummy flavors together; then finish off by adding lemon juice or vinegar if needed.
  3. When the hour is up, preheat the oven to 400 F. Drain both fruits in a saucepan over medium-high heat until reduced by half and add two tablespoons cornstarch with ingredients before reducing liquid again. Simmer together for about 10-15 minutes more or less. Add two tsp of cornstarch and stir the liquid and add it back to fruits.
  4. Start with a 9 or 10-inch pie plate and butter it well to create the perfect pie. Roll out one crust for your 12-inch round crusted dish, then place it into buttered pan trimming edges if necessary to get rid of any excess dough from around the pie’s outer edge. Fill a pie dish with the filling and dot it heavily. Cut out two pieces of dough, one for each crust, then roll them out until they’re paper-thin.
  5. Spoon the filling into your pie shell, spreading it evenly to cover as much base of dish or jar. Place thin edge crusts together and seal them by pinching with fingers tightly packed around edges
  6. Bake the pie in oven 40 – 45 minutes or until the filling has thickened and bubbles are visible through sides & bottom crust lightly browned if too quickly cover loosely during last 20 min then remove from Oven Allow Cool At least 1 hour before serving.
