Do Squirrels Eat Strawberries? How to Prevent?

Squirrels eats strawberries.

Fruit is devoured by squirrels with gusto. If you reside near a fruit tree, bushes, or vines, you’ve probably spotted squirrels happily nibbling and storing these delectable treats for themselves. Squirrels can easily climb fruit trees to get at the fruits. Squirrels eat fruit from a range of trees, including grapes, pears, kiwi, apples, avocados, nectarines, peaches, plums, figs, citrus, mangoes, and, various others. Squirrels will consume any fruit they can find, including strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, mulberries, and other berries. Bananas, watermelons, cantaloupe (any melon, in general), and cherries are also favorites of squirrels. Squirrels benefit from fruit because it offers them a big sugar rush and gives them plenty of energy to keep scrambling around and looking for more delicacies.

How to Prevent Squirrels from Eating your Strawberries?

PLANTS SHOULD BE COVERED WITH MESH OR NETTING.

You’re inviting squirrels to snack all day if your garden isn’t walled in and enclosed with a material like chicken-wire. If you can’t afford or don’t have the space for a huge enclosure, garden mesh rolls will come in handy. Garden netting is an excellent technique to keep squirrels away from your fruits, veggies, and garden plants. Smaller trees can be wrapped around this shortly before the fruits ripen. We’ve also used it to wrap over some of our smaller garden bed plants, such as tomatoes and strawberries. This will prevent squirrels and birds from stealing your produce and digging up your plants.

CONSTRUCT ENCLOSED CONTAINS

Squirrels will try to get through everything, so enclosing your plants fully is an option. Ascertain that it is encircled on all sides and from above. They can also dig, so if you’re planted in a raised bed with a wood plank side, they’re unlikely to get in. Fix a totally enclosed area above ground with materials such as wood, PVC pipe, chicken wire, and so on. You can get some inspiration from Pinterest or acquire the products I mentioned earlier.

INCLUDE VEGETABLES THAT SQUIRRELS DO NOT LIKE.

Plant a few of these flowers in your backyard. They dislike the smell of these flowers and may stay away from them. Plant marigolds, daffodils, geraniums, hyacinth, or lily-of-the-valley among a few more flowers. Plants with strong scents, such as peppermint, garlic, onion, or pepper, are also avoided. Try putting these in your garden for your own pleasure rather than theirs.

SQUIRREL REPELLENTS OR DETERGENTS CAN BE USED.

Squirrel repellents are available in a variety of forms. I’ve heard that squirrel predator urine-based repellents or deterrents are available. Red fox urine, for example, is one of the things for sale. Squirrels dislike the smell of humans and dogs, therefore I heard about a hairdresser who carries home hair to distribute over her flower beds to keep them away. We tried spreading cayenne pepper around, but it only appeared to work for a day or two before they figured it out or got tired of it. A selection of natural sprays and repellents to use against squirrels is provided below. Some of them may be available at your local Home Depot or Lowe’s, or you can order them from Amazon using the links below. You can also use a fake bird of prey statue to scare squirrels away; we have an owl in our yard that we shift about every few days.

DO NOT ENTICE THEM TO COME TO YOUR YARD.

Squirrels will stay indefinitely if they can locate plenty of food that is easy to get to. It will be easier if the buffet is kept to a minimal. Keep bird feeders, cat and dog food, and other pet food out of your yard. All trash, yard clippings, and compost piles should be covered and contained.

Final Word:

Like we mentioned, squirrels are extremely enthusiastic when it comes to eating, and they are particularly attracted to berries. So, if you have planted a strawberry plant in an area dominated by squirrels, you should be aware that your plant is always going to be under threat. However, by implementing the strategies discussed above, you can keep squirrels away from your plants. If squirrels are a major problem for you, you should consider using a combination of the above tactics.
