What is Mission Pie?

Mission Pie is a corner café, bakery, and neighborhood gathering place in the Mission District that brings the flavors of local farms into the city and tells their stories. Mission Pie encourages urban folks toward intimacy with their food through live relationships with the people and places that grow our ingredients.

With pie as our ally, we create a warm environment that encourages exploration of our choices and values, and where, as neighbors, we can find support and friendship in our pursuit of healthy and sustainable lives. Mission Pie, Interior We celebrate farmers, bakers, chefs, and all who work together toward a healthful food system.

Mission Pie is a business venture that collaborates with the non-profit Pie Ranch, a diversified small-scale educational farm one hour south of San Francisco. Through hands-on work and collective reflection at Pie Ranch, San Francisco teenagers discover new competencies and insights that benefit them as individuals and in community.

The idea of Mission Pie is rooted in a conversation with Mission High School youth during their first visit to Pie Ranch in 2005. They remarked that many people in San Francisco don’t have the means to visit Pie Ranch to experience the personal connection with the farmland that sustains us. Mission Pie is an attempt to bridge that gap. Mission Pie is a tangible connection to Pie Ranch; a place, like the ranch, where people can gather with a sense of community purpose and belonging. Since our opening on January 3, 2007, Mission Pie has provided jobs and training for the youth Pie Ranch works with at the farm.

January 3, 2009: Happy Anniversary!

Thank you for spending so many warm moments with us during the last 2 years.

On the eve of our 2nd anniversary, we were leaving the shop yesterday at about 7pm and I was hit by that extra good feeling that comes from looking around the place and seeing such a diversity of age, culture, and activity. There was so much happening at once harmoniously, and in several languages: A pensive scrabble game, a first date, 6-year old leg swinging on the pew, solitary pie-eating, reading, serious chat, and a laptop. You all make this a special place, and we thank you.

We are looking forward to a third year of continued good spirit and a whole bunch of new products!

NEW YEAR’S HOURS

We will be open until 5pm on the last day of 2008, if you need to pick up a pie to ring in the New Year. On Thursday, January 1, we will open at 8am and be here until the usual 9pm.

ORDER CHRISTMAS PIE BY SUNDAY!

If you are wishing for delicious and low-stress Christmas pie, don’t forget to place your order before the end of Sunday for pick-up on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday for your holiday festivities. Walnut, Apple-Cranberry, Pear-Ginger, and Sweet Potato are the Christmas offerings.

THANKSGIVING PIE

If you missed the deadline of Sunday, November 23 to pre-order Thanksgiving pie, don’t despair. We will be selling 4 varieties of pie on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday before Thanksgiving on a first come-first served basis. We will not accept orders nor can we hold a pie for you during this time, but if you don’t wait until the last minute, you are more likely than not to get a pie for the holiday.

We will be offering 4 pies during Thanksgiving week:
Apple Pie
The classic double-crust pie made with an assortment of apples from NanaMae Orchards and other California growers.
Pear Cranberry Pie
Sweet, ripe Bartlett pears and fresh cranberries are topped with a brown sugar crumb.
Walnut Pie
Craig McNamara’s walnuts have inspired our spin on the traditional pecan pie.
Pumpkin Pie
Our seasonal favorite is made with a mix of roasted pumpkins and winter squash from Pie Ranch, enriched with milk and cream and sweetened with brown sugar and apple juice.

Please note that we will be closing at 7 p.m. on Wednesday the 26th, and we will be closed on Thanksgiving day and the day after, re-opening on Saturday with our normal hours.
Remember, cash or check only. No cards.

The Mission Pie staff and its collaborators wish you peace, happiness and abundance on your Thanksgiving.

OK, Friends and Neighbors! We’re DOING IT!

WE’RE MOVING INTO THE NEW SPACE

Mission Pie will be closed on Monday June 23 and Tuesday June 24. Apologies in advance for messing with your routine, and we’ll miss you, too, but we need a couple of days to move the espresso machine, the pie racks, the tables and chairs, and to put the finishing touches on our shiny, new corner storefront, designed and built with care and great spirit by Selander Architects and Logan Design and Construction.

On Wednesday, June 25 (barring unexpected delays), WE WILL RE-OPEN!

During the coming three months, we will continue construction on the back of the space and in September, we will open our kitchen on this site, and begin baking all our pie (and new surprises) here at home, after giving huge thanks to the Destination Baking Company cousins for their months of accommodation and support of the Mission Pie production.

We appreciate your patience with our process, and look forward to welcoming you in the new space.
Thanks to Jesse A. Brown for these construction pictures.

What is all that noise?!

We are excited to be expanding Mission Pie into the corner storefront. The construction in the corner storefront includes a seismic upgrade Mission Pie, Coming Soon - Amor de Cosmos — we want this beautiful building to be standing for a long time — and a clean-up and conversion to house the retail part of our operation, that which you currently access from 25th Street. Soon, probably in early April, you will be able to sip your coffee while gazing at the happening scene on Mission St. Construction will continue in the back part of the building, and after another 4 or so months, we will unveil… drum roll please… a baking and cooking kitchen to offer pie and so much more. We appreciate all the input you offered about your hopes and desires for this growth, and are so pleased to be doing it with your support. Photo courtesy of D.S. Black
